Why some people stay slim ‘easily’ and some don’t
Ever wondered why that friend of yours can stay so slim without what seems like much effort at all while others are struggling with their weight. You may fit into one of these categories. Cornell Food and Brand Lab research findings have given us some insight, whether surprising or not, as to the lifestyle ‘secrets’ of the effortlessly slim.
The research was pretty straightforward. They divided a group of people into two groups. The first groups reported that they didn’t maintain strict diets of any sort where as the other group consisted of people who reported that they thought about food regularly and were highly conscious of what they ate. The idea of the study was to examine the behaviours of people who tended to stay mindlessly slim compared to those that didn’t. Is it possible that the difference in waistlines is behaviour driven? Is it possible that Victoria Beckham has some sort of secret to slimness? She’s a busy mum after all? How on earth does she do it? (Well, the answer to that might be nannies, a personal trainer and a personal chef).

Anyway back to the question. Is the ability to stay slim ‘easily’ just the result of simple behaviours?
The researchers reported the results and found that the mindlessly slim individuals were more likely to use a different set of strategies to keep slim from the more traditional recommendations for weight loss or maintenance.
What were these strategies and characteristics of the slim?
- Eating high quality foods
- Cooking at home
- Listening to inner cues to stay slim.
- On top of that they didn’t report feeling as ‘guilty’ as the others when they did overeat.
- They are more likely to have an enjoyment-based approach to food, which is based on internal cues of satisfaction and control, but not guilt.
Not exactly rocket science but still very important research. Think about it. No guilt. Eating for pleasure and enjoying food. Just knowing when to stop eating. Cooking at home and eating high quality foods. It’s pretty simple stuff, really. Executing it seems to be a lot easier for some than others, however. Or is it?
When I get asked about how to ‘lose weight’ I find that people are looking for some hidden ‘secret’ of mine. Something that gives me that ‘edge’ over them if they are struggling. The answer is there is no secret. You have to get over that ‘I can’t be stuffed’ mentality to exercise. You have to get over that ‘I can’t be stuffed’ mentality when it comes to meal planning and preparation. You have to get over that damn excuse of ‘Oh, well. I ate one chocolate biscuit so I may as well eat the entire packet.
Fitness and health is not the result of secrets. It’s the result of simple, daily habits. Strategies that are used day in and day out. While being ‘slim’ is great, fitness is crucial to a healthy, long life.
